Ayia Napa, Cyprus: Casanova Gets Married?
From his ‘office’ under the lifeguard's sheds, George ‘runs’ the Beach according to his philosophy that states that woman is the best thing that could happen to a man. Not just one woman – thousands if possible. They are all wonderful and charming, but they will all leave you if you do not have enough money to spend on them. And spend he did. This Casanova has spent many thousands of dollars to glorify them, his women, and to bring them joy.
On the whole, he just wants to do well. An older couple of English tourists tell how they go on vacation only on George’s beach in Cyprus, because nobody can beat his hospitality.
He laughs heartily when a tourist teenage girl explains, for the camera, what’s cool about piercing your tongue. “Why you laughing?" she asks George, and he promises to give her the answer later on. Between one thing and another, he warns the jet-skiers to keep away from the rocks, because he has no insurance. Not just for jet skis – on anything, he says, there is no insurance, so you should try to get most out of life as long as you can.
George now has competition: a young new Casanova, 27 years old, who has lived on the beach since he was twelve. He flirts with George's women, and both he and George will tell to the camera about the other.
But George still has his magical charm. He is big and burly, with a terrific smile. He truly loves people and the camera loves him. After two sentences it is clear why everybody falls in love with him. But he has now found the love of his life.
Nyala is Russian, 24 years younger than he is (she is 27), a gynecologist. She promised to come in July and marry him. He is already planning how he comes to the airport with a thousand roses – and meanwhile he is crying on the phone with her, in front of the camera.
…And the camera – it, too, awaits her at the airport. Nyala arrives with her cousin, a pretty English teacher, and her mother. We follow George and Nyala out for a true moment of romance at dinner, with their loving conversation held in broken English.
George’s love may have come back – but it is not certain there will be a wedding because, as George says, there is no insurance on anything.
